Getting Started with Minimal Church

Need help installing Minimal Church? Here’s a good guide.

Theme Options

You can find the theme options panel under Appearance → Theme Options in the WordPress Dashboard.

General Options

Logo – Upload an image logo. If you don’t upload an image logo, Minimal Church will use the Site Title and Tagline set in Settings → General. The Title font can be changed under the Typography tab in the theme options panel.

Favicon – Upload a favicon that will display in the browser address bar. It should be 16 by 16 pixels. You can create one online here.

Home Message – This text will be displayed under the main header image on the home page only.

# of Home Features – It’s recommended that you choose 3 or 6 since images are displayed 3 across.

Custom CSS – Add your own CSS as needed. This can especially be helpful if you are using a Google webfont and you need to adjust one of the heading sizes.

Anayltics – Add javascript tracking code for services like Google Analytics.


Note: The background can be changed in Appearance → Background. You can many free background images at Subtle Patterns.

The following options allow you to apply basic customizations to your theme colors.

Accent Color – This applied to the menus, the top border of the page, the top border of the footer, and all blockquotes.

Link Color – Choose the color for all of your hyperlinks.

Link Hover Color – Choose the color to use when hovering over a hyperlink.

Google Fonts – There are several options allow you to make changes to your theme fonts for headings, body, and the home message. Enter the name of the Google Web Font you want to use for the headings. For example, you would need to enter “Averia Gruesa Libre” if you want to use this font:


Enable Slideshow – This can be used to disable the home page slideshow.

Slideshow Delay – Enter the number of seconds you want to elapse between slides.

Slideshow Effect – Choose between one of the two options.

Social Links

These details are used for the contacts widget and the contact page template. Enter the full url for each service.

Post Images

Show Featured Image on Single Posts – This controls whether to show a featured image on individual posts. For more information on featured images, please see this article:

Featured Image Size – If you checked to show a featured image, you can choose between display a small thumbnail image or a full-width image.


Enter text that will be displayed in the footer. Adding text here will replace the default text displayed on the theme.

Creating the Main Menu

In your WordPress admin, click on “Menus”, which is located uner the “Appearance” tab on the left. Start by creaing a new menu in the panel on the right. Once the new menu is created you can add pages, categories, and custom links from the panels on the left. You can then re-order and create submenus by dragging the menu items. When you’re finished, click the “Save Menu” button.


Adding Widgets

This theme has several custom widgets and a number of widgetized areas in which you can use them. To add widgets, click on “Widgets” under the “Appearance” tab in your WordPress admin. Click and drag a widget to one of the boxes on the right. Then set your options for that widget.

Setting Up the Home Page

By default, this theme will display your latest posts on the front page. To activate the home page as seen in the demo, first create a new page and name it something like “Home”. As you’re creating this page, select the “Home” page template in the Page Attributes box found in the right column. After you publish your page, go to Settings → Reading. For “Front page displays”, choose a static page and select your newly created “Home” page. Then save your settings.

Home Page Slideshow

This theme has a slideshow that you can display on the home page. You can enable and disable it in Appearance → Theme Options under the Home Page tab.

You can add and manage slides under the “Slides” tab in the main WordPress admin menu. By default, slides are made up of a Title, subtitle, image, and link. In the Slide Options box you can choose to hide the text. The recommended image width for the slides is: 960px wide by 320px tall.

Feature Images

The default number of feature images to display on the home page is three, which can be changed in theme options if necessary. To add feature images go to Dashboard > Home Feature > Add New, and fill in all pertinent information. Remember that your feature images can either be used as links or as static pictures such as in our theme demo.


Setting Up a Blog

If you’ve followed the steps above to set up your home page, you’ll probably want to display your posts on a different page. You can easily do this by creating a new page and giving it a name like “Blog”, “News”, or whatever you’d like to call it. After you publish your page, go to Settings → Reading. For “Front page displays”, choose your newly created “Blog” page for Posts page. Then save your settings.


There are three available widget areas: Home, Footer & Sidebar.

Minimal Church comes with several custom widgets that can be used:

Minimal Church Twitter Feed

This widget is used to show your recent Twitter activity. Available options allow you to set the title, the number of tweets to show, and your username. Make sure you keep the @ sign in front of your username.

Minimal Church Social Links

Displays icons for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Vimeo, and YouTube based on your settings in the Theme Options panel.

Minimal Church Latest Posts

Display your recent posts from any category. If your posts have a featured image set, a thumbnail image will display in the widget as well.
